The New Orleans-Santa Fe District Vocation/Formation Program:

 

Stage One – The Contact Program

“I’d like to learn more about the Christian Brothers and the Lasallian Mission”

§         An opportunity to explore the meaning of a Christian Brother’s vocation while in high school and college

§         For those who wish to explore the Brothers as a serious option, but keep other options open as well

§         An invitation to take a closer look at the Brothers over a few years

§         Open to young men in the second semester of high school or following

§         An invitation to develop the spiritual, intellectual and affective dimensions of one’s life

§         A local Contact Brother is appointed to accompany the young man in this journey of discernment

§         This program extends for a maximum of four years.

Stage Two – The Residency Program

“I commit myself to study and live in a community with the Christian Brothers”

§         The first community-based stage in the formation program

§         The candidate must be accepted by formation personnel.

§         A formation program is tailored for each individual.

§         The Brothers’ Community is the means and environment which will foster the candidate’s growth.

§         The candidate pursues the necessary professional and spiritual studies usually in a collegiate setting.

§         This program lasts for a minimum of two years.

Stage Three – The Postulancy Program

“I commit myself to work and live in association with the Christian Brothers”

§         The candidate enters an apostolic community and assumes the title “Brother.”

§         He shares in the educational mission and spiritual exercises of the Brothers’ Community.

§         He works closely with the Director of Formation to deepen and sustain his growth in the apostolic spirituality St. John Baptist de La Salle.

§         This program lasts for a period of one or two years.

Stage Four – The Novitiate

“I believe the Lord is calling me to be a Christian Brother”

§         A total immersion in a life inspired by the spirit of faith and zeal and based on the life journey of St. John Baptist de La Salle

§         The Brother embraces more profoundly the personal call of God to build the kingdom as a Christian Brother.

§         This novitiate is for one year.

Stage Five – Temporary Vowed Life

“I consecrate myself, in association, to the ministry of education and the life of community as a Christian Brother.”

§         The Brother continues his initial formation in an apostolic community.

§         Care is given to the Brother’s spiritual and apostolic formation by the Director and the Principal of the school.

§         The Brother is helped to maintain a steady growth in commitment to the vocation.

§         The period of temporary profession is from five to eight years.

Stage Six – Perpetual Vowed Life

“I consecrate myself entirely to God to procure His glory as far as I shall be able and as He will require of me.”

§         The final affirmation of the Brother’s desire to answer God’s call

§         Signals the beginning of a life-long attention to continuing formation

§         In preparation, the Brother makes a three or four week retreat to integrate and ratify his definitive commitment to God and the Church.
